Midterm for Figure Sculpture:
The following items need to be as described for a small critique on Thursday, October 4th:

This should be completed with all details, rendered as close as possible to the skeleton in the classroom that it was modeled after. Do not forget to have hands, feet, the skull, and vertebrae included.
Skull
This should be completed with all details, rendered as close as possible to the skull in the classroom that it was modeled after. In addition, the work should be hollowed out and composed for use in an installation that will happen in the near future.
*Written Component - type a description of how you will use
this skull as an installation component according to

This should be completed with all details, inspired by your own hands and feet and composed in such a way that will convey something about a person of your choice from history or literature according to the stipulations laid out in the projects document. In addition, this work should be in the leather-hard state as we have not hollowed it out yet. I should be completely constructed and ready for carving out.
*Written Component - type a description of how you will use
these hands and feet to create a composition that will.
function as a portrait of a historical or literary person according

final composition will look like.

Class09_Homework_September 18th

Dear Students-
Please find your group below for homework and have a great week!
Sincerely,
Professor Urrutia

Content Portfolio
Use the advice you received in critique to strengthen your content and develop and construct two more pieces for the next critique. In addition, you will also need to have a palette of at least five glazes mixed up and fired so we can consider said finishes for your work during our discussion. These five colors should also have at least 3 different textures: shiny, satin, matte or textured.

ATTENDANCE NOTE: Just because you have the entire class to work independently does not mean that you can not show up or wander around the entire time working on other things and be considered present. If you choose to take advantage of this freedom in a negative way, I will mark you absent for the day, make no mistake. This track of study is for advanced students who have the maturity and discipline to work alone. If you don't have the focus required for making your own body of work, I will insist that you participate in the workshop instead.

homework
In addition to designing and creating two new pieces, find and bring in three more pieces of research to read and add your written analysis to in your sketch binders. All research must be printed out.
None of you remembered to leave your sketchbooks last class. Please have these ready for me at the beginning of next class. Thank you!
Homework summary:
  • Begin work on at least two new pieces
  • Mix up and fire all your glaze tests so we can see what they look like for critique 2
  • Bring in (3) more articles that pertain to your work
Figure Sculpture
Hands
Please have two hands constructed and put together except for the thumbs. I will show you how to create thumbs during class on Thursday.
Feet
Please have two basic foot forms created and leather hard for next class. The toes for these feet should be in order in a separate container. We will form the toes the same way we formed the fingers. We will do this on Thursday.

Class05_Homework_September 4th

Dear Students-
Find the group you belong to below. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. I will see you very soon!
Professor Urrutia

Figure Sculpture
Today we worked half the day on skulls and the other half on skeletons. Things are coming along very well, but remember to be patient and to MEASURE!!! Many mistakes being made are because you aren't actually observing the thing that you are rendering. If you are having problems, you are probably not spending enough time looking and comparing!!!

Homework
  • Skull - Have your skull completely rendered and ready for carving-out.
  • Skeleton - All the major bones of the body should be in place. For homework add the spine and the rib bones. Next class, we will talk about adding hands, feet, skulls and arm structures.

Content Portfolio
In class, I spent time talking about articles that you should have gathered for homework and made record of who had what. You should have had at least three and these should have been from reputable and academic sources. If you don't know how to find these, you may go to the library and get a handout detailing the subscriptions the school pays for. Better yet, you can go to http://library.mca.edu/ (this is a link) and see the school's catalog as well as click on the subscriptions from the comfort of your desktop. Some of the sites we subscribe to require that you make an account from school or are on-campus access only. Carefully read the descriptions to discover which have these requirements.

Homework
  •  [3] New pieces - critique 1 is September 13th!!! - You need to have three constructed forms for critique and your first working statement.
  • Draft 1 Working Statement - Be sure that you come to class next Tuesday with your printed statement to receive full credit. See syllabus for details.
  • Sketchbook - Be prepared to scan the contents of your sketchbook binder when you come to class on Tuesday. You should have these sections: Critique notes, Research and Analysis, Planning and Sketching, and Glaze Notes and Glazes
