Class 20

Dear Students
This is the last week to build anything new in wet clay. If you do not follow this directive, chances are you will not be able to completely finish your work for the semester. After this week, there are four weeks of class remaining including finals.

CONTENT PORTFOLIO
Today we had critique. Please use the suggestions you heard to strengthen the writing and work you submitted. There is only one more critique for the semester and it will be the final. Please be ready to present.

HOMEWORK
*Use any extra building time to make as many new pieces as possible, even if you have the required amount.
*Dry and fire all of your work
*Glaze all work
*Create a maquette or drawing that details the final presentation of all your work. See me in person if you do not understand what I am asking you to do.

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE
All exercises [skeleton, skull, hands, feet] should be completely finished and ready to fire/glaze by next week. If you are not finished with the before-mentioned, you are behind. Please use your time this week to catch up.

HOMEWORK
PORTRAIT BUST
Today I showed you how to flesh out and refine the foundation of the facial features. You should have all your features finalized by class on Thursday. Next class, we will be going over hair and clothes.
FINAL PIECE
This work should be nearing the end of construction. I will be asking to see this work during next class. Please be sure that you use your time until then to get to this point.

Class19_Homework_October25th

Dear Class
I saw a fair few of you at the talk on Thursday. Please type up what you heard at the panel and what you thought about the conversation in general. Email this to me before class on Tuesday please.

Please, please, PLEASE finish all of your exercises over the weekend so you can spend all your in-class time working on your bust in class next week. Your final piece should be completely constructed by Friday next week [last wet day].

I was at the studio all day and night yesterday and only saw a few people working. This the time to go the extra mile to get your work finished well!.

Content portfilio people will have critique on Tuesday first thing. If you haven't emailed you statement, please do so immediately!

Sincerely,
Professor Urrutia

Dear Students
Please find your path of study below and have a great week!
Sincerely,
Professor Urrutia

Figurative Sculpture
The following things will be done for final. Please read each description to see where this work should be at this point in the course:

Skeleton - this should be completely constructed and refined. I have noticed some of yours trashed on the floor. You must submit your skeleton for final and have professional-caliber photographs of it to submit digitally.

Skull - this work should be completely constructed and refined so that you can use it to create a meaningful installation of your design. It should be drying and ready to bisque very soon.

Hands & Feetthis work should be completely constructed and refined so that you can use these parts to create a meaningful installation of your design. It should be drying and ready to bisque very soon.

Portrait Bust - this work should be completely constructed and refined so that you can use these parts to create a meaningful installation of your design. It should be drying and ready to bisque very soon.

Final Piece - this work should be well underway and nearing building completion. It should do two things simultaneously. First, it should be meaningful and inspired by external research. Second, it should showcase techniques you have learned in the class this semester. Be prepared to craft your research and perspective into a well-written statement that supports what the audience sees in the work visually. If you do not have this piece started, you are in danger of not being finished for the semester.

Content Portfolio
This week should have been your 3 critique looking at the calendar for the course. Since I received no statements today in class to use for said critique, I am extending the deadline for talking about physical work to next Tuesday. This means your statements will be due  this week during next class [printed out for me to collect]. If you have your printed statement I will know that you have looked at the blog to find your homework:)

Class16_Homework_October 11th

Dear Students
The following group has clay making and firing responsibilities this week. I have provided phone numbers so you may contact eachother easily. Please make a note of these numbers somewhere you can find them again:
Group 1
Chris Dickson
615-775-8793

Latiyah Cotton
901-302-6491

Be sure you are working together as a group, sharing these responsibilities. If I find out that one of you is not pulling your weight, your lack of participation will be noted which will affect my decision to write letters of recommendation for you in a negative way and will adversely affect your final grade. You have been made aware! Please be responsible.

Homework - Figure Sculpture
Self-Portrait Bust
This work should be well underway so that you have the armature completely covered with a layer of clay. The resulting form should resemble the gesture and form of your pose in a credible way and should be to scale. This work should be on the soft side of leather hard.

Final Sculpture
You have all spoken with me about your final piece. Yours should be well underway by the time we meet for class this Thursday.

Homework - Content Portfolio
Final [2] Pieces
Continue working on your final [2] pieces. Please be prepared to show me your glaze palette by next class.

Bisqued Work
Please have your first [3] sculptures bisqued by next critique.

Homework for all
Meetings to discuss midterm grades
Please make an appointment to meet me during office hours so we can talk about your midterm grades. The schedule starts today:
October 9th  -   Larissa     4:30pm
Tuesday           Latiyah     4:45pm

October 11th  -  Hannah  4:30pm
Thursday           Susan    4:45pm
                          Tray       5:00pm

I will not be meeting after 5pm this Thursday because I am leaving to go out of town at 7:20pm that same day and need to be at the airport at  5:30pm.

Clay making and firing
Intermediate and Advanced students are responsible for making clay and firing kilns for themselves and others in clay classes. To this end, I have made groups so that certain individuals have total responsibilities for these two activities. The groups are listed below. This week will be an open week, so responsibilities start next week. These groups will be added to the calendar. Please remember to look at the calendar if you don't know who has responsibilities for what week:

Group 1                                        Group 2                                        Group 3
Chris Dickson                                Hannah Johnson                           Kat Trevino
Latiyah Cotton                               Tray Thompson                             Larissa Walters
                                                      Susan Stephens

Homework - Figure Sculpture
Rasterbator
Self-Portrait Bust
Make your newspaper armature match the dimensions you took when you measured your head. The armature should be within those dimensions, not exactly those dimensions or your clay form will be a lot bigger than the measurements you made!!  No matter your pose, you need to have very clear photographs of the contours of the head from the front and from the side. Have a classmate or other friend take these for you and make sure they are not too close when they photograph you or there will be a distortion in your image. Make these images into a size that can be tiled like the ones that I did for you in class. The Rasterbator site is what I used to make your photos print as tiles. The link for this is embedded in this blog post and in the course resource folder on the Google Drive. Also, I have placed all the photos I adjusted in a folder in each of your personal folders should you need them.

Final Sculpture
Please submit your research and your [3] maquettes to me when we meet to talk about midterms. As a reminder, if you cannot come up with your own idea, refer to the end of the final project sheet for suggestions in list form therein.

Homework - Content Portfolio
Final [2] Pieces
Please continue working on your final 2 pieces. None of you turned in a glaze palette for midterm. Please try and get this work done as soon as possible.

[3] Final Pieces of Research
Please find [3] more pieces of external research to read, analyze in writing, and inspire the direction of your written intention and sculptures.
