Class02_Homework_August 23rd

Sculpting the Figure
Homework - Take care of Francis and his fragile head [it falls apart easily!].

Skeleton Sketchbook Work - Please make measurements for all sides of the head on the handouts I made for you.
Each person should have 3 skull handouts. If you didn't get yours, they are in the cubby where we keep fired work at the entrance of the room. Mark lines and label these with the corresponding measurements to indicate the widths, depths, and heights of the skull. Have this work completed before coming to the next class and bring the work with you.
  • Make measurements for all the parts of the top of the skull
  • Make measurements for all the parts of the skull
  • Make measurements for all the parts of the skull
  • Make measurements for all the parts of the skull
Sculpting the Skull - Have the basic form of the skull established
  • Use about 12# of clay to make the basic form of the skull
  • Create the masses of your skull in proportion to the actual skull you are looking at
    • Use calipers to compare the dimensions/measurements of what you are making to Francis' actual skull
Sculpting the Skeleton - Have the wire armature together with its rib cage lined with tape by next class
  • Use sighting and the handout given to you in class to make a skeleton armature and put the parts together. Be sure to match proportions in such a way that the wire will be covered once it comes time to cover it with clay to make the bones.

Watching Video - Take notes of this video if it helps you
Watch this video to see the way the artist approaches making their skull. There are some very good tips! fast forward as there is a lot of dead space therein.
